利き茶(紅茶編)

ダージリンとかアッサムとか、誰でも名前は聞いたことがあるでしょうが、「イマイチ違いが分からない」とのことで、彼氏が全部一気に飲んでみて違いを知りたいと言い紅茶セットを買ってきました。
そんなわけで、紅茶の利き茶をすることになりました。

使ったのはTWININGSのティーバックセット。
右上から左に
プリンスオブウェールズ(中国茶ブレンドと思われ)、ダージリン、アールグレイ
下の段は右から左に
セイロン(オレンジペコー)、レディーグレイ(アールグレイにさらにフルーティーな香り付け)
アッサムがなかったので、左下はブルックスのアッサムで代用。

結構どれもそのお茶の特徴をそのままつかんだようなお茶で、違いが分かりやすかったです。
こうしてみるとなるほどと色々勉強になりますよ。

Joaquin received an Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayal of the Joker (Arthur
Fleck) - and the film garnered an additional Academy Award for Best Original Score. 

The sequel also screened during the Venice International Film Festival last month
in September, where it earned a 12-minute standing ovation, per Deadline.

'not a hit job on Anthony Albanese'.

Aston insisted he's 'not trying to get a scalp', but reiterated that the Prime Minister 'had a
direct line to Alan Joyce'.

The book claims Mr Albanese got 22 upgrades from economy
on Qantas flights by personally requesting them from the airline's then CEO Mr Joyce - which the Prime Minister has categorically denied.


According to unnamed Qantas 'insiders', 11 of the 22 flights Mr
Albanese got upgrades for were 'privately funded' and included overseas trips to Rome, London, Los Angeles and
Honolulu. 

But instead of addressing the claim, Mr Albanese chose to
shoot the messenger and, in turn, shot himself in the foot. 

He said Aston was using the accusations to sell books
and said he was hiding his employment history. 

'I don't see declarations that he's a former Liberal Party staffer… I don't see declarations he's a former Qantas
employee,' the Prime Minister said. 

But before the book even gets to the contents page there is a photo of Aston that refers to him as the then-Qantas
corporate communications senior adviser.

And the first chapter of the book reveals that he worked
for then-Liberal MP Bruce Baird, who held
the southern Sydney seat of Cook before Scott Morrison. 

'My professional history is not a secret or not disclosed, it's in the first line of the first page of the
book,' Aston said on Tuesday night, just before his book
launch. 

Though he was grateful for the free publicity Mr Albanese's response gave the book, Aston was still 'staggered'
at the untrue claims about him the Prime Minister made. 

'He's under enormous pressure and I know, I've seen this many times
with public figures and leaders who struggle to see their own part in it, the terrible circumstances that they create,' he
said.

Asked if Mr Albanese had been poorly advised in his attack, Aston, who
is a former Australian Financial Review columnist, wonders if the Prime Minister 'even listens
to advice at this point'.

'All he's doing is talking around the issue and he's
blaming me and he's blaming other MP's for also taking upgrades (on Qantas flights).


'He's avoiding the only thing that he can't talk
about, which is, did you ask Qantas for confirmed upgrades on your private holidays
when you were the Transport Minister? The answer is "yes"
and he's desperately trying to avoid saying it.'

Smelling blood, Opposition leader Peter Dutton said the Prime Minister should refer himself to the anti-corruption commission over the flight upgrades.


Coming on top of Mr Albanese's tone deaf purchase of a $4.3million clifftop mansion while so many people are struggling to pay their
mortgage or rent, the latest blow to his credibility
has led to calls for him to resign.

Aston refuses to be drawn on this, though. 

'I never expected this (part of the book) to even this part to get this far.
I really am shocked at how it's blown up.

'So to the extent that it has, I would say ...

anyone who reads the book will learn that this
book is not a hit job on Anthony Albanese. This book is about Qantas. 

'Anthony Albanese is an example of how Qantas influences politicians on both sides of the aisle, Labor,
Liberal, National, you name it. They've been doing it for more than a generation.

'They're the best influence peddler in Australia.

I'm not here trying to get a scalp. That's not what this book is about
and it never was.'

But the conversation Daily Mail Australia had with Aston mirrors the conversations being had across Australia
and eventually winds up back on Mr Albanese. 

'Even I've underestimated how fed up the public is with the freebie mindset of politicians,' he said.

'And unfortunately for Albanese, he's been in politics a long
time and that kind of behaviour is quite normalised to him, is what I've seen. 

'I mean, he loves the free concert tickets and sitting at the front row of the Australian Open Tennis. 

'I went to the Australian Open Tennis as a journalist almost every year for 12 years and he was the
only Prime Minister (I saw there).

'Those tickets are worth thousands of dollars to sit in the front row of the International Grand Slam.
He's the first Prime Minister who I've ever seen do that.


'That to me is a sign that he doesn't quite get what it looks like to
others when he's on the gravy train. And I think (the claims in the book are)
just another example of that.'

In Australian politics it's regular practise for an MP's travel to be booked in economy, then someone in their office phones the airline and asks if their flight
can be upgraded. 

The difference with the Prime Minister is that 'he had
a very direct line to Alan Joyce,' Aston said.

'The other thing is there's a difference between an upgrade
where it's in the booking and if the seat's empty when the flight closes, you'll get upgraded.



'This is different. This is a confirmed upgrade
where the ticket is converted and you are guaranteed.

You're not going to the airport crossing your fingers going "Geez, I hope there is a spare seat".




'You're guaranteed. You turn up knowing you're getting a seat and the only person at Qantas who can issue those types of upgrades
is the CEO. No other executive can do that.

'So it is beyond question that Alan joints authorised these upgrades (for
Anthony Albanese).'

Aston enjoyed many upgrades to the pointy end of planes during his time as a travel journalist, and understands the attraction for politicians to get up there. 

'These things are tempting and it's human nature too.
Once you've experienced the front of the plane, it's very hard to go back.


'For politicians, they run around with all these staff and they've got chauffeured
cars and they fly in business, but they don't get
paid like CEOs ...

'They're not in a situation where they can afford to go flying around in the front of the plane on personal travel. 

'A normal person would say "Therefore I won't (fly business class). But (for politicians) it's a culture of entitlement.'

Aston is careful to point out that most people would say politicians are 'very well paid compared to the average worker'.

But that doesn't stop some MPs from desperately seeking a free ride, whether it's a flight upgrade, concert tickets or the executive box at sporting events. 


Late on Wednesday night, a spokeswoman Mr Albanese said 'The Prime Minister did not ever call Alan Joyce seeking an upgrade'.

'All travel has been appropriately declared and is a matter of public record.'

The movie's box office collapse was swift and has many in the industry wondering: How
did the highly anticipated sequel to an Oscar-winning, billion-dollar film
with the same creative team go wrong? Just three weeks ago, tracking services pegged the movie for a $70 million debut,
which would still have been down a fair amount from Joker's record-breaking $96.2 million launch in October 2019.

Amid the early returns, a number of fans took up for the
movie and its cinematic depth, in breaking away from the cookie cutter nature of sequels to introduce a musical element not present in the first film,
with Lady Gaga joining the franchise 

Reviews were mixed out of the Venice Film Festival, where it premiered in competition like the first movie and
even got a 12-minute standing ovation.

But the homecoming glow was short-lived, and the
fragile foundation would crumble in the coming weeks with its Rotten Tomatoes
score dropping from 63 percent at Venice to 33 percent by its first weekend in theaters. Perhaps even more surprising were the audience reviews:
Ticket buyers polled on opening night gave the film a deadly D CinemaScore.
Exit polls from PostTrak weren't any better.
It got a meager half star out of five possible.

'That´s a double whammy that´s very difficult to recover from,'
said Paul Dergarabedian, the senior media analyst for Comscore.
'The biggest issue of all is the reported budget.
A $40 or $50 million opening for a less expensive movie would be a solid debut.'

Joker: Folie à Deux cost at least twice as much as the first film to produce,
though reported figures vary at exactly how pricey it was to make.
Phillips told Variety that it was less than the reported $200
million; Others have it pegged at $190 million. Warner Bros.
released the film in 4,102 locations in North America.
About 12.5 percent of its domestic total came from 415 IMAX screens.


Internationally, it's earned $81.1 million from 25,788 screens, bringing its
total global earnings estimate to $121.1 million. In the next two weeks, Joker 2 will
also open in Japan and China.

Second place went to Universal and DreamWorks Animation's The Wild Robot, which
added $18.7 million in its second weekend, bringing its domestic
total to nearly $64 million. Globally, it's made over $100 million. Warner Bros.' Beetlejuice Beetlejuice  took third
place in weekend five, Paramount's Transformers One landed
in fourth and Universal and Blumhouse's Speak No Evil rounded out
the top five.

The other big new release of the weekend, Lionsgate's White Bird, flopped with just
$1.5 million from just over 1,000 locations, despite an A+ CinemaScore.


Overall, the weekend is up from the same frame last year, but Joker's start is an unwelcome twist
for theater owners hoping to narrow the box office deficit.











The sequel has already been the subject of many think pieces, some who posit that it was deliberately alienating
fans of the first movie

Phillips and star Joaquin Phoenix have said they aspired to make something as
'audacious' as the first film. The sequel added Lady Gaga into the fold , as a Joker
superfan, and delved further into the mind of Arthur Fleck, imprisoned at Arkham
and awaiting trial for the murders he committed in the first.

It´s also a musical, with elaborately imagined song and
dance numbers to old standards. Gaga even released a companion album called ''Harlequin,' alongside the film.


The sequel has already been the subject of many think
pieces, some who posit that it was deliberately alienating fans of the first movie.
In cruder terms, it´s been called a 'middle finger.' But fans often ignore the advice of critics, especially when it comes to
opening their wallets to see revered comic book characters on the big screen.

'They took a swing for the fences,' Dergarabedian said.
'But except for a couple of outliers, audiences in 2024 seem to want
to know what they´re getting when they´re going to the theater.
They want the tried and true, the familiar.' 

Deadline editor Anthony D´Alessandro thinks the problem started with
the idea to make the Joker sequel a musical.

'No fan of the original movie wanted to see a musical sequel,' he wrote on Saturday.


The first film was also divisive and the subject of much discourse, then about whether
it might send the wrong message to the wrong type of person. And yet people still flocked to see what the fuss
was about. Joker went on to pick up 11 Oscar nominations,
including best picture and best director, and three wins.
It also made over $1 billion and was the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time,
until this summer when Marvel's Deadpool &
Wolverine took the crown.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S.

and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore. Final domestic figures will
be released Monday.

Lady Gaga is getting back to basics.

Following her panned performance in the flop movie Joker: Folie à Deux,
the New York City native, 38, is releasing a single titled Disease, set to be released Friday.


Diesase, the first of songs from her forthcoming seventh album, was teased Tuesday on the Grammy-winning artist's
Instagram account, as she captioned the image: 'DISEASE 10.25.'

In a teaser clip from the viewpoint of an approaching vehicle, the actress-singer, whose real name is Stefani Germanotta, sported a black mane as
she ran from it.

Gaga's label Universal Music on Monday put out pre-saves for the forthcoming
single, with links to Spotify and Apple Music, Variety reported.

Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are asking voter to
choose between an immigration crackdown and reproductive
rights

As their race for the US presidency comes down to the wire, each major candidate has leaned heavily on a favorite theme -- abortion rights for Democrat Kamala Harris and border security for Republican Donald Trump.


In Arizona, their ideological duel has reached a white-hot peak, with both
topics the subject of fiercely debated ballot referendums.


And in this key southwestern state -- where the billionaire Trump lost to President Joe Biden in 2020 by a tiny margin of about 10,
500 votes -- every ballot truly will count.


In the mid-sized city of Tucson, hundreds of volunteers in orange T-shirts were going door-to-door
to try to persuade voters to back a ballot measure
to inscribe abortion rights in the state constitution -- and,
while they're at it, to vote for Vice President Harris.


To Grace Ireland, a 26-year-old activist, the abortion restrictions
imposed by several Republican-controlled states amount to "a public health crisis that Donald Trump and the Republicans have created."

She added, "Democrats and Kamala Harris are trying to push us forward and protect women's health care and protect our democracy and protect all people."

Since 2022, when the US Supreme Court ended
the constitutional protection of federal abortion rights, Ireland,
a registered nurse, has worked in several
states where abortion is banned or severely limited.

Those restrictions have had sometimes disastrous consequences
for women having problem pregnancies or carrying nonviable
fetuses when doctors refuse to treat them.

"Women are going septic and dying because they cannot receive the care that they need," she told AFP.



- 'Abortion is murder' -

As Ireland carries her message to potential voters, she noted, particularly
to young people who may be less likely to vote, that it was Donald Trump who appointed the three justices who tipped the Supreme Court against abortion rights.

"It's important to reiterate that Donald Trump and these abortion bans are one and the same," Ireland said.


But in Tucson there is little unanimity among young
voters.

"I do think that abortion is murder," said Pedro Lopez, a 20-year-old college student.


"There are cases of incest or rape" that merit exceptions, he conceded,
"but that's very small."

He also worries about the flow of undocumented migrants that have entered
the country from Mexico during the Biden-Harris administration.

"People that are entering the United States illegally... should be sent back to where they came from," he said.


"My grandparents migrated from Mexico to the United States, and they did it the right way."

So he plans not only to vote for Trump, but to back the proposal to
let local law enforcement detain, arrest and prosecute anyone suspected of having entered
the country illegally -- powers normally reserved to the border police who work for
the federal government.

"I know people that work for the Border Patrol, and they're really upset because this current administration has really tied their hands up. They're not really able to do anything,"
Lopez said.

- Mixed impact -

The major political parties see the competing referendums as offering an opportunity to mobilize more
people to vote -- on ballot questions at the very heart of the
two presidential campaigns.

But the referendums may not have the clear impact
on the race for the White House that activists hope.

Polls show Trump and Harris running neck-and-neck in Arizona, with
the Republican holding a very narrow lead.

Both ballot questions, meantime, have drawn strong support and both
appear likely to pass.

So the abortion issue may not be "helping Democrats in the way that they would hope," said Jenny Brian,
a professor of bioethics at Arizona State University.

Many Republican women will vote both to protect abortion rights
and to bring Trump back to the White House, Brian said.


Though abortion is sometimes framed as a Democrat vs.
Republican issue, the Republican Party includes
"a broad spectrum of views on the topic," an issue that also raises conservatives' concerns
about "government interference," she added.

The same dynamic applies to immigration, with the tougher language on the Arizona
ballot question finding support not just among Trump Republicans but also "moderates and even many Democrats," said John Kavanagh,
a Republican and an Arizona state senator.

The 74-year-old Kavanagh is unimpressed by Harris's recent toughening
on migration, specifically her promise to maintain the partial closing of the border
Biden ordered in recent months.

The vice president, Kavanagh said, is "running away faster from her open-border policy than an illegal immigrant that runs away from the Border Patrol."

Smile 2 - starring Naomi Scott, Lukas Gage and Jack Nicholson's

office showdown.

The fright flick eclipsed hot contender Terrifier 3 for the top spot.



The Smile sequel starring Scott, 31,  as a pop star who begins experiencing
terrifying and inexplicable events as she prepares for a
world tour, opened wide in more than 3,600 theaters, pulling in a payday of $23 million.

Broussard, shocked fans with an eerie grin in the new
movie, which was near-identical to the Oscar-winner's maniacal
smile as Jack Torrance in the 1980 Stanley Kubrick classic,

In a legendary scene, an insane Jack hacks at a bathroom door
with an axe as his cowering wife Wendy (Shelley Duvall) screams inside.
As he busts a hole in the door, he sticks his face through, grins and exclaims:

The original Smile, released in September 2022, and starring Sosie Bacon, was a sleeper hit, which

Australians have discovered an unlikely pop-up store offering shoppers 'incredible' deals on clothing, homewares, food, and electronics.


The temporary Vinnies locations have been set up around Victoria to help shoppers get through
the cost of living crisis ravaging the country.


Vinnies, or the St Vincent de Paul Society, is a charity that
works to provide support and assistance to people in need.



Most items are brand new stock donated by corporate partners including Christmas decorations.

Do Greens and crossbenchers who claim that transparency and integrity is at the heart of their reason for entering Parliament in the first place hear themselves?


In the past few days they have mounted self-serving arguments against proposed
electoral reforms that the major parties look set to come together to support.


The reforms include caps for how much money wealthy individuals can donate, caps on the
amount candidates can spend in individual electorates to prevent the
equivalent of an arms race, and a $90million limit on what any
party can spend at an election - actually less than the major parties currently spend.


The proposed new laws also include lower disclosure thresholds for donations, thus increasing the
transparency of who makes political donations in the first place.


So the wealthy wont be able to hide behind anonymity
while using their cash to influence election outcomes - and the extent to which they can use
their wealth at all will be limited.

The bill will further improve transparency by also increasing the speed and frequency that disclosures of donations
need to be made.

At present we have the absurd situation in which donations
get made - but you only find out the details of who has
given what to whom many months later, well
after elections are won and lost.

In other words, what is broadly being proposed will result
in much greater transparency and far less big money being injected
into campaigning by the wealthy.




Teal Kylea Tink claimed the major parties were 'running scared' with the policy
and warned the reform would 'not stop the rot'

is a major-party stitch-up'

Anyone donating more than $1,000 to a political party, as opposed to $16,000 under the current rules, will need to disclose having done so.
And how much they can donate will be capped.

Yet the Greens and Teals have quickly condemned
the proposed new laws, labeling them a 'stitch-up',
'outrageous' and 'a rort, not a reform'. 

They have lost their collective minds after
finding out that Labor's proposal just might secure the support of the opposition.

I had to double check who was criticising what exactly before even starting
to write this column.

Because I had assumed - incorrectly - that these important transparency measures stamping out the
influence of the wealthy must have been proposed by the virtue-signalling Greens or the corruption-fighting Teals,
in a united crossbench effort to drag the major parties closer to accountability.


More fool me.

The bill, designed to clean up a rotten system, is being put forward by Labor and is opposed
by a growing cabal of crossbenchers.

It makes you wonder what they have to hide. Put simply, the
Greens and Teals doth protest too much on this issue.




Labor is thought to be trying to muscle out major political donors such as
Clive Palmer





Another potential target of the laws is businessman and Teal funder Simon Holmes à Court





The Greens have taken massive donations in the past, contrary to their irregular calls to tighten donations rules (Greens leader Adam Bandt and Senator
Mehreen Faruqi are pictured)

The major parties have long complained about the influence the likes of Simon Holmes à Court wields
behind the scenes amongst the Teals. 

And we know the Greens have taken massive donations from the wealthy in the past, contrary
to their irregular calls to tighten donations rules.



Now that tangible change has been proposed, these bastions of virtue are running
a mile from reforms that will curtail dark art of political donations.


The Labor government isn't even seeking for these transparency rules to take effect immediately, by the
way. It won't be some sort of quick-paced power play before
the next election designed to catch the crossbench out.

They are aiming for implementation by 2026, giving everyone enough time to absorb and understand the changes before preparing for them.


Don't get me wrong, no deal has yet been done between Labor and the Coalition. I imagine the
opposition want to go over the laws with a fine tooth comb.


As they should - because it certainly isn't beyond Labor to include hidden one-party advantages in the proposed design which would create
loopholes only the unions are capable of taking advantage of,
therefore disadvantaging the Coalition electorally in the
years to come.

But short of such baked-in trickiness scuttling a deal to get these
proposed laws implemented, the crossbench should offer their support,
not cynical opposition, to what is being advocated for.

PARIS (AP) - Not even a tense tête-à-tête in the gold medal game could spoil the vibe at
Paris´ biggest beach party.

Canada´s Brandie Wilkerson and Brazil´s Ana Patrícia got into a finger-pointing shouting match across the net in the tiebreaking third
set of the beach volleyball final of the Paris Olympics on Friday night.
The referee tried to keep the peace, but it was the Eiffel Tower Stadium DJ who
cooled tempers on the sand by playing John Lennon´s "Imagine" over the PA system.


The players laughed and clapped. The crowd applauded and sang along.


Wilkerson was shown a yellow card.

The top-ranked Brazilians left with the gold medal.


"We`re competitors and we are fighting for the same thing: There´s only one gold medal," Wilkerson said during a
post-match news conference in which the two laughed and jokingly put up their
fists as if they were going to brawl it out.

"Immediately after the game, it´s all love and respect," she said.
"We bring out the best in each other, and I´m honored to play against this team."

Ana Patrícia and Duda rallied from an 11-5 deficit to take the first-to-21,
win-by-two first set 26-24, and Canada won the second 21-12.
Brazil opened up a 12-7 lead in the first-to-15 tiebreaker when, after a joust at the net, Wilkerson and Ana Patrícia began pointing fingers at each other.



The second referee, the one at sand level, moved out to separate the two players,
but Wilkerson continued to argue and picked up a yellow card.

As the Brazilians got into position to serve for the
next point, the DJ began playing "Imagine," the late Beatle's song calling for unity and peace.



The message resonated with the players.

"What a beautiful opportunity we have to play the finals under the Eiffel Tower against the best in the world," Wilkerson said.
"Like, that, in of itself, is a win."

Wilkerson told reporters afterward that it was all a misunderstanding:
She was responding to her family, cheering in the crowd behind the Brazilians, and
Ana Patrícia thought Wilkerson was taunting her.

"We´re pretty amped up, partners are coming in, refs are coming in. So it was a bit of a mess," Wilkerson said.
"But after the game, and even right when they came to shake our hands, still on the court, there was an immediate hug and just kind of like, `Hey, it´s all good.´"

When play resumed, it took Brazil only five more points to finish
off Wilkerson and Melissa Humana-Paredes, kicking off a party the sport's spiritual
home hadn't seen since hosting the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games at Copacabana.
In Tokyo, the country was shut out at the Summer Games for the first
time since beach volleyball was added to the program in 1996.


Three years later, Brazil not only returned to the podium but climbed to its top step.


With the Eiffel Tower's strobes sparking in the background and yellow- and green-wearing fans singing and waving Brazilian flags, the country was awarded its first
women's gold since Atlanta. (The United States, which had won four of the last five, was shut
out in both the men's and women's tournaments in Paris.)

After the medal ceremony, the Canadians and Brazilians - along with the bronze-winning Swiss
- posed for selfies together. Wilkerson and Ana Patrícia spoke to each other and hugged; there may
have even been an air kiss.

"It was a game thing," Ana Patrícia said. "Everybody wants to win. But it happens. It´s everybody trying to win, but now everything is OK."

Wilkerson and Humana-Paredes will return to Canada with the country's first beach volleyball medal since the men won bronze at the 1996 Atlanta Games.
That team was coached by Humana-Paredes' father.

Switzerland beat Australia in straight sets in the third-place game earlier Friday night to earn the bronze medal.


Nina Brunner and Tanja Huerberli beat Tokyo silver medalists Taliqua Clancy and Mariafe Artacho del Solar 21-17,
21-15 in 39 minutes. It was the second Summer Games in a row that a Swiss team took the bronze
medal, coming three years after Joana Heidrich and Anouk Vergé-Dépré placed third in Tokyo.


On the men's side, Sweden was set to face Germany for gold on Saturday night,
with Norway and Qatar playing for the bronze.
